The main benefit of air conditioning is that it allows you to keep your building at a comfortable temperature no matter what kind of weather you’re having. In your own home, a good air conditioning system allows you to enjoy whatever activities you like, without feeling uncomfortably hot or cold.
Being in a cool environment is beneficial to people with heart or lung disorders, because overheating puts you at risk of heart attacks and breathing difficulties. People with allergies usually also benefit from being in an air-conditioned building. If a building like a home (or a hotel or guesthouse) is too hot, the occupants may have difficulty sleeping, or just sleep less well – so air conditioning in these places could make everybody feel much better.
People are more likely to go into buildings (shops, restaurants etc.) when the temperature inside is comfortable – and once they have gone into a building, those people are likely to spend their money. Workers are likely to be more productive when they are working in a comfortable environment, and they are more likely to get sick if the quality of the air in a building is poor.
The main types of air conditioning systems are Freestanding Air Conditioners, Split Air Conditioners, Ducted Air Conditioners, and Cassette Air Conditioners.
Freestanding systems are the cheapest, as these are small units that you plug into your mains, much as you would an electric heater. They are easy to move around to the areas where they are most needed, but having small units plugged into wall sockets around the building does not look very polished, and takes up more space.
Split air (or wall-mounted or ‘window’) systems have the compressor – which is noisy and bulky – on the outside of the house. The compressor is connected by cables and pipes to the internal part of the air conditioner, inside the house. Split air systems can be customized by remote control, and they have different options for temperature, fan power, and climate control. They also come with a timer system and a special quiet mode for use at night. They are more efficient than freestanding systems, and take up less space, but they cost more. On the other hand, split air systems are cheaper than ducted systems.
Ducted or central air conditioning is the most expensive, but also the most discreet type of system. Several outlets can be connected to the same central air conditioning unit, which therefore controls the air temperature throughout the entire home. Alternatively, each different outlet can be controlled separately (as with split air systems). Like split air systems, ducted systems can also be customized by remote control.
Cassette Air Conditioners are installed in the middle of the ceiling (and lights can be fitted around the cassettes). They distribute air evenly away from the centre of the room, in four directions. This type of air conditioner is ideal for installing in new buildings, as they are being built, but more difficult to set up in a room that was built without considering air conditioning, because the existing wiring for the lights are likely to be in the way. Cassette air conditioners can be used for any indoor living areas, but are especially effective in high-ceilinged rooms.
Split air, ducted, and cassette air conditioners need to be installed by a qualified contractor (like the contractors provided by YourPro).
Usually, installing air conditioning systems is quite a quick and easy process that takes no more than a couple of days. However, if you’re installing a cassette air conditioning system in a new building, delays in the building process may also delay the installation of the air conditioning system.
You waste energy if you have an air conditioner that is more powerful than you need, but you also waste energy if your unit is not powerful enough. An air conditioner that is not powerful enough will still use a lot of energy, but the energy won’t be enough to cool down the room very much. That would be wasteful.
The power of an air conditioner unit is measured in tons. If you say you have a one-ton unit, that means it can remove one ton of air from the room, cool it, and return it to the room, in one hour. To make things more convenient, many countries use British Thermal Units (or BTUs) to measure the power of air conditioners in a standardized way.
The size air conditioner that you need will depend on the size of the room or rooms you wish to cool down. One of the air conditioner installers will be able to evaluate your space and let you know which size would work best.
Depending on the size of your unit, it will cost approximately €0.09-€0.16 per hour. If you have a single unit, and you run it for about six hours per day, that will come to just under €30 per month – and for a system with several units, you could pay up to €175 per month.
That may not sound like very much – but by comparison, if you use a desk fan for six hours per day for a month, that would only cost just over €2.
The factors that affect the cost of installing an air conditioning system include the type of unit being installed, and the size of the area being targeted. Note that our prices apply to jobs in the Dublin city area, and that installations in other areas may attract extra costs.
