Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Attic Insulation?

When you are dressing to take a trip outside in winter, you will likely pull on a warm hat? Insulation is that comfortable hat for your house.
Attic insulation is a material placed in the attic to ensure warm air cannot escape outside and cold air cannot come in. It forms a barrier ensuring that heat from the warm air inside the house is not transferred via conduction to the outside and vice versa. Similarly in summer, heat from the sun does not get transferred to the air inside the attic keeping your home cooler.

What Are the Benefits of Proper Insulation in the Attic?

If your attic is improperly insulated or the insulation hasn't been checked for years, there are a few ways that this can affect your home.

Utility Bills
The Irish weather is more inclement than many other countries, which results in considerable gas and electricity usage for heating the home and using appliances such as clothing driers.

While there is little we can do about the weather, we can do much to ensure that our homes are as air tight as possible, so we lose as little heat as possible. One of the easiest places to lose heat is through the attic insulation, and proper insulation in this space will result in substantial savings on gas or electricity costs for heating.

Building Structure
Many people do not consider the effect that poor insulation can have on the structure of your home. The damage caused by moisture seeping in from outside is insidious and sneaks up on the householder over time.

Poor insulation can result in moisture seeping in, which affects rafters and other wood in your home. It also allows warm air to escape, causing icing along the roof's edge as the snow melts in the warm air and then refreezes.

The moisture that seeps into the attic can contribute to the growth of mould, which can be a severe health hazard as well as looking unsightly.

Air Quality
As we have said, moisture can seep in through poorly insulated attics, but so can dust, pollen, and other airborne toxins.
Properly insulating your attic can cut down on these unwanted pollutants from entering your home, resulting in better air quality for the whole family.

More Comfort
Warm air will naturally flow from a warm to a cooler area resulting in temperature fluctuations throughout the home. This means that temperature changes outside the home can result in the interior heating up or cooling down very quickly.
If there are temperature differences between upper and lower floors or in different rooms, it can point to poor insulation.

Improve Your BER Rating
Before renting or selling your home, you need to get a Building Energy Rating (BER) certificate. This rating measures the efficiency of the building by calculating the carbon dioxide emissions and the kilowatt per hour usage per square meter per year.
The ratings range from A1 (best) to G (poorest), and those properties with good ratings indicate they are energy efficient and should have lower utility bills. This makes them better properties to buy or rent.

Legal Requirements
There are both Irish Government and local authority requirements for the management of energy. These regulations all specify that insulation of buildings is imperative to limit the energy usage required to heat or cool them. The homeowner must be aware of the rules - all of which are available on the internet.

SEAI Benefits
It is helpful to look at the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) website as there are case studies of savings achieved by homeowners who have insulated their homes properly. This website also gives details of the available grants to assist with the cost of insulation or getting the BER rating afterwards.

For a comprehensive understanding and additional insights akin to the topic at hand, we invite you to explore our dedicated blog post that delves into the Benefits of Loft Insulation

What Are the Types of Attic Insulation?

There are several types of insulation available, and the one you choose is dependent on what it is you are trying to achieve.
The recommended depth of insulation in an attic or loft space is 270mm. To give you some idea of how wide that is, a standard A4 page is 210mm wide, so you need a depth of a little more than the width of a sheet of A4 paper. We will look at a few of the most common types of attic insulation.

Batts or Insulation Rolls
Batts are sizable rectangular insulation pieces made from cellulose, mineral fibre, rock fibre, glass fibre, felt, sheep's wool, hemp, or cotton fibre. The rolls are the same material as the batts but supplied in roll form. These materials come in differing sizes, and many are designed for a particular use, such as sound deadening.

Expanding Foam
Expanding Foam is a type of foam that is sprayed on and expands in place. It creates a rigid impervious shield that will ensure the area is air and water tight.

Loosefill Insulation
If you have odd spaces that need to be filled, you may be able to use loosefill. These are small pieces of cork or polystyrene that are shot into the nooks and crannies. The area should have no gaps or holes as this being loose, it is susceptible to being blown around. Any cracks or holes could let the insulation out.

Reflective Foils
Some insulating material is supplied sandwiched between reflective foil.

How Much Is Attic Insulation Cost ?

The cost of the job will be dependent on the type of insulation used, the size of the attic, and any additional work that needs to be done.

The cost of the job will be dependent on the type of insulation used, the size of the attic, and any additional work that needs to be done.
The type of insulation used will also depend on what you intend to do with the attic after insulation. If you want to use this valuable space, then insulating the floor is not a good idea as it will make the room very cold, but if you do not intend to use the attic, that gives you more options.

Using spray foam insulation that covers every nook and cranny, making a complete air and water-tight seal should cost in the region of €1200 for a three-bedroom semi-detached house.

Flat-roofed houses are more challenging to insulate but need it more than houses with a pitched roof. Flat roofs are more susceptible to leaking, and there is little space between the roofing material and the ceiling of the room below. The attic insulation could cost as much as three times more to insulate properly.

Attic Insulation Sounds Like an Easy Job. Can't I Do it Myself?

If the attic has no insulation and you intend to lay batts or rolls on the floor and not use the attic, then this is a job that the competent DIY enthusiast can handle. However, you will also have to ensure you adhere to all the legal requirements.

If you intend to use the loft or attic space, or there is existing insulation, or the attic needs some attention, it would be in your best interests to call in an attic insulation specialist firm and have the job done professionally.

You will find an attic refurbishment company with the necessary experience and skill on YourPro. The job will be accurately quoted and competently carried out, resulting in effective insulation being laid. Your home will meet the regulations, and you will be able to claim the benefits as laid down by the SEAI.

Log into our portal and answer our few easy questions. We will then put you in touch with experts for attic insulation that can carry out this work, saving you time, trouble, and headaches.

What Areas in Dublin Does YourPro Cover?

YourPro continues to bring excellent attic insulation companies into our fold to provide you with the best advice and service possible. The attic insulation companies for which we have details cover most of the Dublin area. If you cannot find an attic insulation company that covers the area in which you live, please let us know so we can work to fill in the blanks.

Where Do I Start for my Attic Insulation?

As with all services, the first step is to find an attic insulation firm that specialises in the insulation of attics and loft spaces. This is where YourPro can help. As you fill in our questionnaire, we will put you in touch with companies to meet your needs.

The initial step would be for the contractor to visit the property and examine the attic. They will be looking for existing insulation and any problem areas that may need to be addressed before starting work on the attic insulation. Examples of these problems could be old insulation containing asbestos that would have to be professionally removed, windows with poorly fitted frames that would need to be repaired, electrical cables that need to be raised to lay above the insulation, and mould that would have to be removed appropriately.

The experts for attic insulation will also discuss what use you have for the space, as this will determine the suggested insulation type. For example, if this space is used as a playroom, it is not good to use fibreglass insulation as it may cause itching or breathing problems in children.

Once this inspection is done, the attic insulation contractor will give you a quote for the job and describe the types of insulation required.
